Recommendations FAQ
If you have a sorority member in your family this is probably a familiar term to you. But, if you are like the majority of potential new members, the concept of a recommendation, also known as a ‘rec’, may be new to you.
What is a recommendation? A recommendation is simply a personal letter of reference provided by an alumna of a sorority to her sorority’s chapter at TCU. In the recommendation, she will write about your talents and skills that will contribute to the sorority.
Why get a recommendation? The purpose of a “rec” is to give a sorority chapter the chance to know more about you before Recruitment – a more personal introduction in addition to their copy of your sorority recruitment registration form.
How do I get a ‘rec’? It is strongly recommended that you secure a recommendation for each sorority. You can start the process by letting friends, relatives and teachers know that you are going through recruitment. If you find an alumna friend, she has two options: she can write a personal letter of recommendation, or she can obtain a form specific to her sorority from her sorority, either through the national magazine or national office. However, you will not be penalized if you do not get your own recommendations.
Where do alumnae find recommendation forms? This differs for each sorority. TCU cannot provide any recommendation forms to fill out. Alumnae may obtain the forms and information from their inter/national website, their sorority publication, or local alumnae chapter.
When and where should they be mailed? The alumna recommending you should mail the ‘rec’ as soon as possible, before recruitment, to her sorority. As with any letter of recommendation, it is her responsibility and not the potential new members to secure a form or write a letter and to mail it. She should mail it directly to her sorority; the addresses are listed on the Panhellenic Recruitment website (click on sorority reference addresses). If you have any questions, email us at Panhellenic@tcu.edu.
What are the deadlines for TCU’s recruitment? Although hometown Panhellenics may set deadlines for recommendations, TCU Panhellenic does not have a set deadline for recs. They may be sent to the chapters at the reference addresses all summer.
